CARES Act
Carson-Newman University (C-N) acknowledges it signed and returned to the U.S. Department of Education the Certification and Agreement on April 29, 2020, and gives the assurance that C-N will use at least 50% of the funds that we will receive under section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act to provide Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students.
1. The total amount of funds C-N received today, July 8, 2020, from the U.S Department of Education for distribution to students is $1,147,584
2. The total amount of Emergency Financial Aid Grants awarded to Students under section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act as of the date of this report is $1,147,585.40. All Funds have been distributed to students.
3. The estimated total number of C-N students eligible to participate in programs under section 484 in the Title IV of Higher Education Act of 1965 and thus eligible under Department of Education current guidance to receive Emergency Financial Aid Grants under section 18005(a)(1) of the Cares Act is 1534.
4. The total number of students who have received an Emergency Financial Aid Grant under section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act is 1534.
5. The method used to determine which students will receive Emergency Financial Aid Grants and how much each student would receive under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act is as follows as of the date of this report-
Student Eligibility
- Undergraduate or graduate degree seeking students enrolled in on-ground classes during the spring 2020 term beginning in January 2020 who continued to be enrolled on or after March 13, 2020
- Eligible for funding under Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965, having filed a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), and otherwise eligible for federal aid by meeting Satisfactory Academic Progress standards
Grant Amounts
- Based on the identified number of eligible students with an even distribution of the funding, each eligible student has been awarded a grant amount of $748.10
- Emergency Financial Aid Grants are to assist with student expenses such as housing, meals, transportation as well as other personal expenses such as medical and/or technology. Eligible students will be given an opportunity to opt out if they did not incur any eligible expense(s) as a result of COVID-19 during spring 2020.
6. The instructions, directions, or guidance provided by C-N to all eligible students concerning the Emergency Financial Aid Grants was sent via University email, published on the University website, and announced via the student portal once awarded. Link: Email notice to eligible students

Carson-Newman University (C-N) acknowledges and gives the assurance that C-N used at least 50% of the funds received under section 314(a)(1) HEERF II of the CRRSAA Act to provide Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students.
Amount Available and Distributed
The total amount of funds C-N received from the U.S Department of Education for distribution to students is $1,147,584.
The total amount of Emergency Financial Aid Grants awarded to Students under section 314(a)(1) of the CRRSAA Act as of the date of this report is $1,147.586.90. All Funds have been distributed to students.
Number Eligible and Awarded
The estimated total number of C-N students eligible to participate by filing a FAFSA, meeting citizenship requirements in an eligible program under Department of Education guidance as of this date to receive Emergency Financial Aid Grants under section 314(a)(1) of the CRRSAA Act is 2102.

The method used to determine which students will receive Emergency Financial Aid Grants and how much each student would receive under Section 314(a)(1) of the CRRSAA Act is as follows as of the date of this report-
Student Eligibility
- Priority of funds to students with exceptional need as those identified with Estimated Family Contributions of 5711 or less
- Undergraduate or graduate degree seeking students enrolled in classes during the spring 2021 term beginning in January 2021, and who continued to be enrolled on February 15, 2021
- Eligible for funding by filing a 2020-2021 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), and otherwise eligible for federal aid by meeting Satisfactory Academic Progress standards and US Citizenship
Grant Amounts
Based on the identified number of eligible students with an even distribution of the funding, each eligible student has been awarded a grant amount of $545.95.
Emergency Financial Aid Grants are to assist with any component of a student’s cost of attendance or for emergency costs such as tuition, food, housing, health care (including mental health care), or childcare.

Carson-Newman University (C-N) acknowledges and gives the assurance that C-N used at least 50% of the funds received under section 314(a)(1) HEERF III of the ARP Act to provide Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students.
Amount Available and Distributed
The total amount of funds C-N received from the U.S Department of Education for distribution to students is $3,033,622.
The total amount of Emergency Financial Aid Grants awarded to Students under section 314(a)(1) of the ARP Act as of the date of this report is $2,951,556.00.
Number Eligible and Awarded
The estimated total number of C-N students eligible to participate by being enrolled in an eligible degree seeking program under Department of Education guidance as of this date to receive Emergency Financial Aid Grants under section 314(a)(1) of the ARP Act is 3217.
The total number of students who have received an Emergency Financial Aid Grant under section 314(a)(1) of the ARP Act is 3176.
The method used to determine which students will receive Emergency Financial Aid Grants and how much each student would receive under Section 314(a)(1) of the ARP Act is as follows as of the date of this report-
Student Eligibility
- Priority of funds to students with exceptional need as those identified with Estimated Family Contributions of 5846 or less
- Undergraduate and/or graduate degree seeking students enrolled in classes during the any term spanning summer 2021 semester beginning in May 2021, fall 2021 semester, or spring 2022 semester
- Eligible for funding by filing a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), and/or otherwise eligible for university financial aid at by being enrolled in a degree seeking program at any time from summer 2021 through spring 2022 semesters.
- All students were automatically considered from census enrollment reports for respective terms for a standard base grant amount.
- Applications were made available for additional grant amounts beyond base amount during the second quarter and will be review and final allocations are anticipated to be completed made during the third quarter.
Grant Amounts
- Based on the identified number of eligible students with an even distribution of the funding, each eligible student has been awarded a grant amount of $928
- Additional grant amounts beyond the base emergency grant that have been awarded to date from applications have been up to a maximum of $1,172
- Allocations from applications are anticipated to be completed during the third quarter.
- Emergency Financial Aid Grants are to assist with any component of a student’s cost of attendance or for emergency costs such as tuition, food, housing, health care (as well as mental health care), or childcare.
